Center for Service Learning

Introduction & Mission

What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is an exciting teaching strategy that integrates classroom theory with meaningful community service projects in an effort to enhance curriculum and promote civic responsibility.  Students engage in activities that benefit their community while developing a connection between classroom instruction and real-life situations. Normandale faculty and students agree that involvement in service strengthens the learning process.

Mission

Service-Learning fosters the development of civically engaged citizens by building reciprocal relationships between students and their diverse communities.  Through the integration of active learning in the classroom, students gain first-hand knowledge of real social concerns.  We create learning opportunities with community partners that help students see themselves as agents of change.

Why Service-Learning?

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."   -Margaret Mead
