Personally, I love to read all sorts of fiction and nonfiction, learn Spanish (it’s going slowly) and watch Hollywood movies. And as my kids have grown, I have developed an expertise in Dora the Explorer, Handy Manny, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse!

Professional Interests: I am keenly interested in the interplay between genes and environment in human development, especially as it is being researched in the emerging field of epigenetics. Also of special focus for me are the many factors that influence the development of caring, honest, and responsible children. My specialty in the area of Philosophy is Ethics, and this translates to a concern for ethical issues in the practice of Psychology, as well as in other areas of scientific research. I am fascinated in the interplay of science and religion, and always looking to see what current findings in science have to contribute to our understanding of such key existential questions as the existence of God and the meaning of our lives. In the other direction, I am also looking to see what religion and spirituality have to contribute to the pursuit and interpretation of scientific research.
Personal Interests: Art, piano, organ and guitar, tennis, playing with my grandchildren and reading LOTS of good books.

Professional Interests: My primary area of scholarly interest concerns the intersection of Psychology and religion/spirituality. In addition to teaching a course related to this topic, I also research, write, and speak publicly about this topic. One area of particular interest concerns how various religious traditions may function as distinct forms of culture. My colleagues and I currently are seeking to develop and test theory related to how traditions may differ in terms of key values, beliefs, and practices; the specific psychosocial processes by which such values, beliefs, and practices may be transmitted to individuals (e.g., experiences in services); and the implications of exposure to different traditions for how individuals may think, feel, and behave (e.g., individuals’ tendencies to experience specific positive and negative emotional states). A second area of interest focuses on key psychosocial variables that may be influenced by various religious and spiritual approaches. In particular, my colleagues and I currently are developing and testing theory on important, but neglected, variables such as spiritual surrendering and perceiving one’s work as a vocation/calling.
Personal Interests: I am a proud husband (10 years and counting) and father (Ellie is 4 and Annika is 2). I spend most of my free time playing with my family. When I have time to myself, I really enjoy spending time in nature. Hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and nature photography are some of my favorite past times. I also enjoy a good conversation and eating good food (Indian and Thai food are my favorites). I even like the idea of building things, but those who know me realize that this interest may be a lost cause.
