College student runs his own record label, plays in 2 bands
by Kaley Johnson

Community College students get it easy when it comes to picking classes. We usually chose classes that revolve around our lives and schedules. Now imagine a student of 21 years of age attending a private liberal arts college full time and after that having to go to work, participate in two bands, and run a label. “I stay up really late and I get up really early. I like hard work and I like being productive,” said Ian Anderson, member of One for the Team and co-founder of the record label Afternoon Records.

Next year Anderson expects to graduate with a B+ average but that’s not all Anderson has to look forward to in the upcoming year. His band ‘One for the Team’ has really taken off in the local music scene. The band’s CD release “Good Boys Don’t Make Noise” has had many good reviews in places like the Star Tribune, New York’s ‘The Village Voice’ and Rift Magazine. The band’s success is dually noted in their power pop style and indie lyrics. Anderson credit’s a lot of his bands success to Myspace.com where people from all over the world can click on any of Anderson’s music groups’ songs.

Anderson has taken a role as one but is ultimately working for team. He is an editor for St. Olaf’s Manitou Messenger. Music may be Anderson’s calling but it seems
that writing is certainly his passion. He has been writing for a paper ever since high school and hopes that St. Olaf will help nudge him towards a career in journalism. Anderson has also started up a small magazine with his school newspaper buddy Peter Farrell.

It is surprising how Anderson has time to work at the popular music venue ‘Triple Rock Social Club’ and even more surprising that he and his friends are opening their own Afternoon Records Studio. The biggest door opener for Ian would probably be Afternoon Records itself.

The idea was thought up when his buddies and him were waiting in line for a Cursive concert. Established in 2003, Afternoon records has housed some bands like One for the Team, The God Damn Doo Wap band, The Plagiarists and the stunning Haley Bonar. All of whom can be heard on 89.3 the current.

Anderson works hard and takes on young eager acts thinking “If they are this good at 18 imagine how good they will be by the time they are 25.” Knowing why Anderson does it one may ask themselves how does Anderson do it? He keeps himself pretty busy but Ian Anderson is a man who could have it no other way. If Ian Anderson has won a music award, co-founded a record label, been editor of his college’s newspaper, started a magazine, been a member of a popular local band and has been writing up in more than two major publications, imagine what Anderson
could be doing by the time he’s 25.
