Book costs concern senate president-elect

The NCC Student Senate elected a new president at the April 5 meeting.

Judi Obeid, a current senate member, ran unopposed for the president position. Obeid will officially become senate president on July 1, after the term of the current president, Joshua Schroeder, ends.

Obeid said he has big shoes to fill with the departure of Schroeder.

“Josh did so much and I and the senate need to live up to that,” he said.

Schroeder said he believed Obeid would excel.

“He's very passionate,” Schroeder said. “He'll do an excellent job.”

Obeid said he plans to work with the senate to address what he said is the primary concern of students.

“The biggest obstacle students face is money,” he said. “If they find money for tuition, they can't find money for books. The senate is going to try and find different solutions for the high cost of books.”

According to Obeid, the senate plans to create, promote and oversee an annual book swap event that will match students who have books up with students who need them in an effort to help all students save money.

Publishing companies, not the NCC Bookstore, Obeid said, are to blame for the high cost of textbooks.

“The bookstore has very little control over book prices,” he said. “The publishers are to blame.”

The senate legislative director position remains unfilled. Anyone interested in the position, Obeid said, should visit the senate office in the Kopp Student Center .

Obeid said he is excited to work for all NCC students.

“I can't wait to get started,” he said.
