NCC will offer a Biomedical Technology degree beginning the fall 2005.
The one-year program consists of two certificates and an Associate in Science degree. It is offered in partnership with Anoka-Ramsey Community College and Inver Hills Community College . The degree is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the biomedical device and product industry.
The Biomedical Technician Certificate requires 33 credits. Students in this program do not need prior background in the field. In addition, the certificate program is the foundation for the A.S. degree.
In order to receive the Biomedical Technologist Associate in Science, 62 credits are needed. It builds on the 33-credit certificate, adding coursework in science, technology, mathematics, problem-solving, and communication.
Only 24 credits are required for the Clinical Research Professional Certificate. This program is designed for students who have already completed an RN degree or a bachelor's degree in pharmacology, biology or a related field.
The degree's fact sheet states graduates will work in manufacturing, product development and testing. Classes include specific biomedical coursework, as well as writing, statistics, and a field experience with a biomedical company.
“Students who wish to complete any of the BMED programs can apply to the program at any time and may take one or two BMED courses before submitting an application,” Dean of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Education Julie Guelich wrote in an email. The application should be submitted to Guelich's office, F1260.
Two core courses offered in the Fall 2005 Semester at NCC are Introduction to Biomedical Devices/Industry, and Introduction to Medical Device Regulations/Ethics.
The expected starting salary in the Biomedical Technology field ranges from $25,000 to $40,000, depending upon background and qualifications.
