Banquet honors NCC student leaders

Students and organizations were honored for their efforts at the NCC Student Life Recognition Banquet on Thursday.

Mohamed Bashir was presented The President's Award for Student Leadership. The award recognizes achievement in academics, leadership and campus and community service. Bashir is the vice president of the Somali Student Association and a member of the NCC Program Board and the Black Student Alliance. He also volunteers for the America Reads/America Counts program. As part of the award, Bashir received $500.

Bashir said winning the award was a surprise considering the efforts of other student leaders at NCC.

“I didn't think I would win,” he said.

Student Leadership Stipend Awards and $200 cash prizes were presented to Joshua Schroeder, Daniel Aguilar, Megan Britt and James Yin. The award recognizes student leadership contributions.

Heidi Lynn Marsh received a Service Learning Award for her efforts in the America Reads/America Counts program.

Outstanding Student Leader in a Club or Organization awards were presented to James Yin for his work with College Democrats and Abdulkadir Mohamed for his leadership of the Indoor Soccer League.

The Indoor Soccer League also received The Outstanding Student Program of the Year Award.

The NCC Program Board was named the Outstanding Student Club or Organization Accomplishment award for their diversity series.

Approximately 20 other students were recognized by their club or organization adviser for their contributions to NCC clubs or organizations.
