NCC's revised security plan

By Brendan Moore

A revisions process is currently underway in the security set up and emergency plan currently in place here at NCC.

According to NCC’s security director Erik Bentley, a section on active shooters is currently being added as apart of the all-hazards plan.

So far, the active shooter section will include things such as procedural instructions on what sort of measures are to be taken and what should be done.

“Just trying to bring us up to the times. We didn’t have an active shooter section before,” said security director Erik Bentley, when asked about recent improvements to NCC’s emergency plan.

In addition, as part of the all-hazards plan, each department will have to come up with a list of things that they will be needing in order for the NCC Security department to be able to provide the same services to off campus class that are offered here on campus.

A crisis management team will also be assembled under the all-hazards plan that will be responsible for deciding if a state of emergency should be declared.

Other improvements to NCC’s emergency plan include procedure for evacuating students with disabilities.

When asked about recent improvements to NCC’s emergency plan, security director Erik Bentley also said “Its gonna be a heck of a lot of work.”

Part of the improvements that are to be put in place will require NCC security staff to undergo a two-day training.

Because of the National Inciden tManagement System, or NIMS, certain training courses are now required for an individual or organization to be incompliance with FY2007. According to the

information on fema.gov the level of training required of all security staff will depend on their level of responsibility during the management of an incident.

Recent improvements and revisions currently being made to the security set up and emergency plan here at NCC are being done because of recent school shootings such as the Virginia Tech shooting last year.

April 16 will mark the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting. A University commemoration is scheduled to be held regardless of weather from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the day of the one-year anniversary. The event will take place on the campus drill field and the names of the 32 students and faculty who lost their lives will be read out loud with special comments from governor Tim Kaine.

Ceremonial candles will also be use at the university memorial site that will burn all day. Other events are also scheduled to take place at Jamestown Squires Student Center as well as other locations throughout the entire day on April 16.

When asked about his reaction to the Virginia Tech Shooting, security director Erik Bentley said, “Probably like most people, disbelief, ya know. Why would someone do that? It was a real wake up call for every college. Even with all the training and preparations, sometime it still isn’t enough.”
