Locks of Love gives wigs to kids in need
By Treonna Banham
Locks of Love, established in 1997, is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who suffer from long-term medical hair loss.
According to the organization’s website, it has reached out to over 2000 children and has been featured on numerous shows such as Jay Leno, Montel Williams, Maury Povich, and “Good Morning America.”
Locks of Love states their main goal as “most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure.”
“The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.”
Others have suffered severe burns, or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem in addition to many other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss, according to the website.
Locks of Love’s sponsors include Fantastic Sam’s, Great Clips, Hair Cuttery, and Garth Brook’s “Teammates For Kids” Foundation.
Of the many hair salons that accept donations for this charity, many will provide a haircut for free in exchange for hair donations.
All those interested in donating hair to this organization must have at least 10 inches of clean, dry hair in a braid or ponytail.
Colored or permed hair is acceptable, but bleached or damaged hair is not.
