Students and teachers honored at PTK induction

New spring 2008 member inductees and guests attended the Phi Theta Kappa Induction Ceremony, on Friday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Lorenz Auditorium.

Honored instructors were also on hand to receive the coveted Golden Apple awards. Chapter officers and advisors thought that the re-opening of the Fine Arts auditorium was partly responsible for the increased attendance of the annual event.

PTK is the official honor society of two-year colleges and the largest honor society in higher education.

The primary purpose of PTK is recognizing and encouraging scholarships, totaling 36 million dollars among two-year college students by providing opportunities for developing leadership and service.

As a result, there is a minimum requirement of completing at least 12 credits in courses 1000 or above with a minimum 3.5 GPA.

President Joe Opatz offered opening remarks after the procession, welcome and introductions. Guest speaker Barbara Teed is a well-respected 2007 NCC graduate and active Phi Theta Kappa officer. She credited the honor society’s support for much of her academic and personal triumphs since returning to college in her fifties a few years ago.

PTK members include officers Jessica Ellingson, President; Margaret Wright, Vice President Scholarship; Amanda Prouty, Vice President-Leadership; Annie Muco, Vice President-Service; Will Hoover, Vice President-Fellowship; Ryan Kromminga, Vice President-Finance; Charly Chai, Vice President-History; Alex Lemaire, IT Director; and supportive advisors Linda Tetzlaff, Regional Coordinator Chapter Advisor and Matt Dempsey, Chapter Advisor.
