Bob's Community Connection Award |
Bob DeFlores' Community Connection Award"I love doing things like this for students," says Bob DeFlores, "Because you can see their eyes light up when they see real history enacted for them up on the screen. Working with students is really what I enjoy most about my work as a film archivist." Bob DeFlores, who grew up salvaging discarded film reels from Hollywood studio back lots in the 1950s, was honored by Normandale Community College as the 2002 recipient of its Community Connections award. The award is presented each year to individuals "who have made extraordinary contributions toward connecting us as a community." It was at a fund-raiser that DeFlores connected with Normandale Community College in 2001, when he was asked to host a "Creative Arts Series" of film/entertainment events for students in need. He responded by bringing his film resource -- and show business contacts -- to bear on a sell-out 100th Anniversary tribute to Louis Armstrong and to a film/live action tribute to tap dancing. DeFlores, who describes himself as a collector, presenter, and teacher of film history, remains connected to the college because of the experience. Normandale Community College and film history lovers everywhere are fortunate to be able to see a vital century of history because of Bob DeFlores' efforts. |
