BUSN 1120:  INTRODUCTION TO SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

 

I.             Effective Date: Fall 1998.  To be reviewed by department annually.

 

II.                 Catalog Description:

BUSN 1120  Introduction to Small Business Management  3 CR FALL, SPR.  Examines all phases of setting up a small business:  Management, marketing and financial operations.  Final project is the development of a business plan.

 

III.            Recommended Skills: No prerequisites.  Reading level 3, English level 2, Math level 1.

 

IV.           Course Content: 

A.               Nature of entrepreneurship and small business

B.               Seeking entrepreneurial opportunities

C.               Developing the new venture business plan

D.               Small business marketing

E.               Managing small business operations

F.                Financial management in the enterprise

G.               Social and legal environment

 

V.           Outcomes:  Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:

A.               Recognize the nature, rewards, and demands of small business.

B.               Understand the components and importance of a business plan.

C.               Develop a business plan.

D.               Make marketing and financial decisions in two business simulated games.

E.               Recognize the importance of the decisions made and how they effect the future of the enterprise.

F.                Develop skills in working effectively as a member of a team.

 

VI,           Methods for Evaluation of Student Learning:

Weekly quizzes, business simulations games, developing a written business plan as a team, business plan presentation as a team, evaluating team members.

 

VII.          Special Information:  Team participation is mandatory, as many of the activities revolve around working in a team.  Students are also evaluated by their team peers as to their effort and contribution to the team.
