II. Catalog Description: The focus of this course is to use the web as an expression of art in and of itself; the web page is the canvas. Emphasis will be put on composition, color, design, communication, as well as individual expression. During this course, students create several websites, increasing in complexity. Exploration and analysis of how artist have used the web will also be a focus, and source for information.
Prereq: Art 2222, 3 credits FALL, SPRING MnTC Goals 2 & 6

B. Artistic Influences
i. Historical and Contemporary
ii. Use of the Internet as a means of artistic expression
C. Equipment and Software overview
D. Aesthetics and critical analysis
V. Outcomes: Students should be able to:
A. Identify and explain the basic visual and conceptual elements that are common to all works of art. Demonstrate the ability to use these elements to create effective Internet art. MnTC Goal 6 (A, C, D)
B. Demonstrate development of objectivity, sensitivity and critical thinking in evaluating any web page effectiveness. MnTC Goal 6 (A, C, D)
C. Create and explain original works of Internet art that explore a variety of formal and conceptual challenges. Demonstrate and explain personal expression and the ability to make aesthetic and conceptual judgments. MnTC: Goal 2 (B); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
D. Identify and explain basic computer operation using visual software programs. Demonstrate technical abilities by successfully completing a variety of imaging assignments. MnTC Goal 6 (A, C, D)
E. Understanding of electronic imaging terminology as it relates to web design, resolution requirements and implications of file size, storage and transfer of image files, and the overall effectiveness of a web page. MnTC Goal 6 (A, C, D)

VI. Evaluation: Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.
Methods of evaluation may include:
A. Creativity in interpreting assignments
B. How well projects meet objectives
C. Aesthetics of good design
D. Technical skills demonstrated in completing assignments
E. Participation in group critiques
F. Tests covering class material including basic knowledge operation and techniques associated with web design
G. Attendance and participation
