ART 2203: Ceramics 2 (3 credits)
I. Effective Date: Fall 2007
II. Catalog Description: Continuing studio experience in wheel throwing, hand building, glazing, decoration and kiln firings. Projects emphasize exploring an individual direction that encourages a deeper understanding of ceramic art as well as skill development. Prereq: Art 1124, 3 credits SPRING MnTC Goal 2 & 6

IV. Course Content:
A. Advanced thrown and handbuilt techniques
B. Glazing and clay types
C. Historic and contemporary techniques and ceramic artists
D. Kiln loading and firing
V. Outcomes: Students should be able to:
A. Identify and explain historic and contemporary ceramics styles, techniques, and materials. Demonstrate skills using ceramics materials and techniques to successfully complete class projects. MnTC Goal 2 (A); Goal 6 (A, B, C)
B. Create and explain original works of ceramics that explore a variety of formal problems of design and function. Demonstrate and explain a personal vision and visual expression and the ability to make aesthetic judgments through actual construction. MnTC Goal 2 (B); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
C. Identify and explain the basic visual elements that are common to all works of craft/art. Demonstrate the ability to use these visual elements in ceramics to create effective functional and sculptural ceramics. MnTC Goal 2 (C); Goal 6 (A, B, D)
D. Identify and explain influences and current trends in ceramics as they relate to the expression of human values, culture, and society. MnTC Goal 6 (A, B, C)
E. Discuss and explain the effectiveness of their creations and those of others by participating in class critique sessions. MnTC Goal 2 (D); Goal 6 (C, E)
VI. Evaluation: Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.

A. Creativity in interpreting assignments
