ART 2206: Glass Fusing 2

I.             Effective Date: Fall 2007

II.            Catalog Description: 

Exploration of advanced techniques in fused and kilnformed glass.  Students will create pieces that utilize fusing, slumping, sandblasting, casting, etching, and lampworking. Aesthetic concerns, technical skills, individual exploration and experimentation lead to a more personal and deeper understanding of the creative qualities of fused glass. Course also includes research, writing and criticism.  MNTC Goal 2 & 6 

Lab fee. Prerequisite: ART 1125.

III.           Recommended Skills: Prerequisites:  ART 1125 Glass Fusing

IV.          Course Content: 

1.     History of warm glass

2.     Lampworking

1.     Etching

2.     Casting

3.     Kiln Firing techniques

4.     Draping, sagging and slumping

5.     Mold creation

6.     Sandblasting

7.     Aesthetics and critical analysis

 

V.         Outcomes:

 

Course Objectives

To successfully complete this course the student will:

  1. Achieve new skills in fusing, slumping, casting, etching, lampworking, sandblasting and manipulation techniques.
  2. Participate in the entire process of designing fused and kiln formed pieces. (Goal 6, D) (Goal 2, B)   
  1. Continue the exploration of the historical and contemporary significance of glass as a utilitarian and expressive material. (Goal 6, A)
  2. Develop a more advanced knowledge regarding the terminology and techniques of casting, fusing and warm and cold working.
  3. Employ the creative process and artistic design principals of developing an idea through producing a final product. (Goal 6, D) (Goal 2, A)
  4. Experience the expressive nature of glass and its creative potential. (Goal 6, D)
  5. Respond critically to glass creations in written and oral form.(Goal 6, C) (Goal 2, C)

 

VI.          Evaluation:

Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.

Methods of evaluation may include:

A.             Creativity in interpreting assignments

B.             Technical skills demonstrated in completing assignments

C.             Participation in oral, written and individual and group critiques

D.   Tests on definitions and terms, advanced knowledge of glass fusing, casting, slumping, etching, lampworking, and sandblasting.
