ART 1124: Ceramics 1 (3 Credits)
I. Effective Date: Fall 2007
II. Catalog Description General introduction to the historical, aesthetic, and technical
aspects of the materials and methods of ceramics. Emphasis on the creation of ceramic pieces that solve aesthetic and technical problems. Students will learn the techniques of hand building, throwing, glazing, decorating, and firing clay. 3 credits FALL, SPRING MnTC Goals 2 & 6

IV. Course Content:
A. Ceramics Terminology and History
B. Handbuilding: Coil, Slab, Carved Techniques
C. Glazing, Underglazing, Decorating, Firing
D. Throwing Techniques
V. Outcomes: Students should be able to:
A. Identify and explain historic and contemporary ceramics materials, terminology, styles, and techniques. Demonstrate skills in using a variety of ceramics materials and techniques to successfully complete class assignments. MnTC Goal 2 (A); Goal 6 (A, B, C)
B. Create and explain original works of ceramics that explore a variety of formal problems. Demonstrate and explain a personal visual expression and the perceptual ability to make aesthetic judgments. MnTC Goal 2 (B); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
C. Identify and explain the basic visual elements that are common to all works of art. Demonstrate the ability to use these visual elements in ceramics to create effective three-dimensional compositions and designs. MnTC Goal 2 (C); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
D. Identify and explain influences and current trends in ceramics as they relate to the expression of human values, culture, and society. MnTC Goal 6 (A, B, C)
E. Discuss and explain the effectiveness of their images and those of others by participating in class critique sessions. MnTC Goal 2 (D); Goal 6 (C, E)
VI. Evaluation: Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.
