ART 1122: Two-dimensional design (3 credits)

 

I.          Effective Date:  Fall 2007

 

II.             Catalog Description:  elements of visual language, color, form, space, and texture as they relate to basic design.  Theory and application of design principles and concept development in two-dimensional composition, using a variety of tools, techniques, and materials. 

3 credits  FALL, SPRING  MnTC Goals 2 & 6

 

 

III.            Recommended Skills:  No prerequisites.

 

IV.           Course Content:

 

A.            Line; Creating lines and recognizing their expressive qualities.

B.            Shape and Form: Sources of shapes, holding shapes together,making the transition from shape to form.

C.            Space: Linear perspective, scale and position, aerial perspective, illusionary space, combining spatial devices.

D.            Texture: Actual texture, simulated texture, built-up media.

E.            Value: representing value gradations, emphasis and design interest, spatial an emotional effects.

F.            Color: Characteristics of color, subjective color, color combinations, color interaction.

G.            Unifying Principles of Design: Repetition, Variety, Rhythm, Balance, Emphasis, Economy.

 

V.            Outcomes: Students should be able to:

 

A.            Identify and explain the elements and principles of two-dimensional design and demonstrate skill in using them successfully in a variety of assigned projects.  MnTC Goal 2 (A); Goal 6 (A, C, D)

B.            Demonstrate the ability to create and explain original designs that explore a variety of formal problems. MnTC Goal 2 (B); goal 6 (A, C, D)

C.            Identify and explain the basic visual elements that are common to all works of art.  Demonstrate the ability to use these visual elements to create effective designs.  MnTC goal 2 (C), Goal 6 (A, C, D)

D.            Identify and explain the aesthetics and history of modern design, propaganda, and commercial advertising as a means of expressing human values.  MnTC Goal 6 (A, B, C)

E.            Participate in group discussions and critiques to explain and evaluate the effectiveness of their own designs and those of others. MnTC Goal 2 (D); Goal 6 (C, E)

 

VI.           Evaluation: Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.  Methods of evaluation may include:

 

A.            Creativity interpreting assignments

B.            Technical skill demonstrated in completing assignments

C.            Participation in group critiques

D.            Tests

E.            Attendance and participation
