Art 1113: VIDEO ART (3 Credits)
I. Effective Date: Fall 2007
II. Catalog Description: An introduction to the aesthetic and conceptual practices of video media. This class is first and foremost a studio art class, as such it will concentrate on conceptualization, interpretation, and evaluation of video based art. Students will develop skills as artists through, screenings, discussions, critique, demonstrations and assigned projects. Students will become familiar with basic production techniques, including but not limited to; project planning and storyboarding, lighting, audio, in-camera editing, VCR editing, and performance for the camera.

A. Project planning and story boarding
B. Use and techniques of lighting
C. Use and techniques of audio
D. Linear video editing techniques
E. Narrative and pacing
F. Critical discussion of video art and artists
G. Contemporary themes and issues relating to art
V. Outcomes: Student will be able to:
A. Identify and explain video camera operation, techniques of video making as a means to a creative end. Demonstrate the ability to use these technical skills by successful completion and explanation of a variety of assigned projects. MnTC: Goal 2 (A); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
B. Create and explain original works of video art that explore a variety of formal and conceptual challenges. Demonstrate and explain a personal expression and the ability to make aesthetic and conceptual judgments. MnTC: Goal 2 (B); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
C. Identify and explain the basic visual and conceptual elements that are common to all works of art. Demonstrate the ability to use these elements to create effective works of video art. MnTC: Goal 2 (C); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
D. Identify and explain historic and contemporary video art as a means of expressing human values. MnTC: Goal 6 (A, B, C)
E. Participate in group discussions and critiques to evaluate and explain the effectiveness of video art created by themselves and others. MnTC: Goal 2 (D); Goal 6 (C, E)
VI. Evaluation: Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.
A. Creativity when interpreting assigned projects.
B. Technical skills demonstrated when completing assignments.

D. Tests covering class material including basic knowledge operation and techniques associated with video art making.
