ART 1111: BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY 2 (3 CREDITS)
I. Effective Date: Fall 2007
II. Catalog Description Quality printing techniques and creative darkroom applications are stressed. Various projects that engage the student in solving aesthetic and technical problems along with analysis, interpretation and individual expression. Students may work with a variety of camera formats. Emphasis on a finished photo. Students are required to use a 35 mm camera with manual f-stop and shutter speed adjustments. It is the responsibility of the student to provide paper, film and finishing materials. Prereq: Art 1110, 3 credits SPRING MnTC Goals 2 & 6
III. Recommended Skills: Prerequisite: Art 1110.
IV. Course Content:
A. The effects of light and its changes on a photographic subject
B. Techniques of natural and studio lighting
C. Darkroom techniques, including double printing, sandwiching negatives, high contrast negatives, Sabbatier effect, and bleaching
D. Camera techniques, including double exposure, diffusion, motion and sequence photography
E. Toning of prints, use of color dyes and oils to hand color B & W prints
F. Historic and contemporary photography including the role of commercial photography
G. Mounting and displaying photographs
H. Assembling a personal portfolio demonstrating student’s creativity in use of theme, cropping of photos, darkroom and camera techniques
V. Outcomes: Students should be able to:
A. Students will learn a variety of film format cameras and will study various types of film, filters, film processing, and printing, as a means to a creative end. They will demonstrate the ability to use these technical skills by successfully completing a variety of photographic assignments. MnTC Goal 2 (A); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
B. By exploring a variety of formal problems and camera techniques, students will create original photographs that demonstrate a personal visual expression and the perceptual ability to make aesthetic judgments. MnTC Goal 2 (B); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
C. Students will study the basic visual elements that are common to all works of art and will further their skills in using these elements to create effective photographic compositions and designs. MnTC Goal 2 (C); Goal 6 (A, C, D)
D. Students will view and discuss historic and contemporary photography as well as commercial photography as a means of expressing human values. MnTC Goal 6 (A, B, C)
E. As part of the creative process, students will participate in group discussions and critiques to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of their own photographs and those of others. MnTC Goal 2 (D); 6 (C, E)
VI. Evaluation: Individual instructors may devise their own methods for assessing performance.

A. Creativity in interpreting assignments
B. Technical skills demonstrated in completing assignments
C. Participation in group critiques
D. Tests on photography procedures and lab techniques
E. Portfolio of special project
F. Attendance and participation in both lab and lecture classes
