COMMON COURSE OUTLINE:  SOC/ANTH Cultural Diversity

 

CATALOG/COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The sociological and anthropological perspectives will be used to understand cultural diversity, the challenges and opportunities it presents, and its importance in our contemporary world.  This course will explore the dynamics of sociocultural change and diversity.  One of the intentions of this course is to promote awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity.  Attitudes and competencies (applications) that are important in our contemporary world will be emphasized such as diversity in the workplace and future trends in diversity.  Sociological and anthropological concepts and methods will be used to investigate the inner workings of sociocultural diversity and multiculturalism.

MAJOR COURSE CONTENT AREAS (Instructors will discuss all of the following but with different emphases):

  1. Introduction to Cultural Diversity
  2. Individual and Institutional Prejudice, Discrimination and Racism
  3. How the Genders are Valued Cross-Culturally
  4. Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Individual Differences, Such As GLBT Phenomenon and Disabilities
  5. Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Social Institutions, Such As Religion, the Family, the Economy, Education and Politics
  6. Life Stages/Cycles in Diverse Cultures
  7. Social Change and Opportunity

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES – STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING THE COURSE SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  1. Define cultural diversity and understand this concept using sociological and anthropological perspectives.  5c
  2. Understand cultural diversity using the sociological imagination and a multicultural perspective.  2b 8d

3.   Describe sociocultural change and cultural diversity in the contemporary world.

  1. Emphasize an awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity.  2d 8d
  2. Develop competencies/applications that are important in everyday life in areas such as diversity in education and diversity in the workplace.  2a 5b 8c 8d
  3. Identify and understand sociological and anthropological concepts and methods used to study sociocultural diversity and multiculturalism.  5a

 

EVALUATION:  Testing format using multiple choice questions, essay questions and other techniques at the discretion of the instructor.
